When a child was born

10 years after the end of the 2nd world war. I was born in Tsan Yuk Hospital . It was the 15th April 1955, 5pm. When my father saw me the first time, he said that I was as dark as a mor law tsai, 麼囉仔. So, that was my name. When I look back my birth certificate, I reckon this name was appeared earlier than my ‘official’ name. Until now my lo gwai friends still call me this.

I learnt from my parents that I have an elder sister. Unfortunately she died when she was only 3. They were reluctant to talk about this history, yet I can still remake the story by bits and pieces from their mouths. I guess that she was suffering from some sort of disease which probably, was appeared not a very serious one. She was admitted to the Tung Wah Hospital . She passed away 3 days later for some reason. That’s why my parents they don’t like Tung Wah. Until now I still don’t know what is the name of my sister? What was the cause of death? Where she was buried?

My mother’s got 3 kids in her life, the above mentioned sister, my elder brother; he is 6 years older than I am, and me myself. All 3 were born by caesarean section. That probably created the following story.

After my brother was born, my father though those 2 caesareans are enough, so he requested the doctor to do tubal ligation to my mother…….

You will know that this operation was totally unsuccessful, because 5 years later she was pregnant again. That was me inside her tummy. My father asked the doctor why? Doc said that he didn’t do the operation, because if you’d got only one boy, that’s a bit risky. (Exact wording was 唔知邊個得力). He’s right.

(Yet I feel sorry that when my mother passed away, it was my brother who was by her side but not me!)
It was because doc didn’t listing to my father, I have this chance to see this beautiful world.

…..to be continued.
